Speedy Dental Alignment

What Is PAOO?

PAOO accelerates orthodontic treatment through surgery-induced bone regeneration and guided tooth repositioning, reducing treatment time.

Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO) is an interdisciplinary dental technique that merges periodontics, orthodontics, and oral surgery. It aims to expedite orthodontic treatment by leveraging the body’s natural healing response. The procedure involves two main steps: first, a minimally invasive surgery stimulates controlled inflammation in the gum and bone around target teeth, triggering bone regeneration. Then, orthodontic forces guide teeth into desired positions within the newly regenerated bone, capitalizing on the accelerated bone remodeling.

PAOO offers a way to significantly shorten orthodontic treatment time by tapping into the body’s inherent regenerative capabilities. This approach is particularly valuable for individuals seeking quicker results or facing challenges with bone support. However, careful patient selection and thorough treatment planning remain essential to ensure success and minimize potential risks.

Determine if the patient is a suitable candidate for PAOO.

2

Collaboration between Orthodontist and Periodontist

The orthodontist and periodontist collaborate to create a comprehensive treatment plan.

3

Preoperative Phase

Obtain diagnostic records, including X-rays, photographs, and dental impressions.
Plan the orthodontic mechanics and tooth movement strategies.
Educate the patient about the treatment process, benefits, and potential risks.

5

Orthodontic Phase

The patient is allowed to heal for a brief period (usually a few days to a week).
Orthodontic appliances (braces or aligners) are placed on the teeth.
Orthodontic adjustments and tooth movements are initiated, taking advantage of the enhanced bone remodeling and accelerated tooth movement.

6

Postoperative Care and Follow-Up

Provide the patient with postoperative instructions for oral hygiene and care of the surgical sites.
Schedule regular follow-up appointments with both the orthodontist and periodontist to monitor progress and make necessary adjustments.

7

Treatment Completion

PAOO, which stands for Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics, is an innovative and interdisciplinary approach to orthodontic treatment. It involves combining orthodontics (tooth movement) with periodontal (gum and bone) surgical procedures to achieve faster and more efficient tooth alignment.
PAOO employs a surgical technique where small incisions are made in the gum tissue, followed by the application of controlled pressure to the bone surrounding the teeth. This controlled trauma stimulates the bone’s natural healing response, leading to accelerated bone remodeling and tooth movement. By optimizing bone support, tooth alignment can be achieved more quickly.
PAOO is generally recommended for adults and older teenagers who require orthodontic correction and have healthy gum and bone tissues. An initial assessment by a dental professional is crucial to determine whether a patient is a suitable candidate for PAOO.
PAOO offers several advantages, including a significant reduction in orthodontic treatment duration. Treatment time may be shortened by several months compared to traditional orthodontics. Additionally, PAOO can enhance the stability of orthodontic results by improving bone support around the teeth.
Like any surgical procedure, PAOO comes with potential risks such as infection, temporary gum recession, and discomfort during the healing phase. However, these risks are typically minor and can be managed with proper post-operative care and follow-up appointments.
The surgical aspect of PAOO is usually completed in a single appointment that lasts a few hours. However, the overall treatment duration, including orthodontic adjustments and stabilization, varies depending on the complexity of the case.
The PAOO procedure is performed under local anesthesia, ensuring that you won’t feel any pain during the surgery itself. Some discomfort, swelling, and mild pain may be experienced during the healing process, but pain medication can help manage these symptoms.
Yes, orthodontic appliances like braces or aligners are still essential to guide the teeth into their desired positions. PAOO works in conjunction with these appliances to expedite the overall treatment process.
After the PAOO procedure, you will receive detailed instructions on how to care for your gums, teeth, and any orthodontic appliances. Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor progress, make necessary adjustments, and ensure proper healing.
The results of PAOO, similar to other orthodontic treatments, are considered long-lasting. However, consistent wear of a retainer, as recommended by your orthodontist, is essential to maintain the alignment of your teeth over time.

It’s hard to beat the dentist I had growing up which created a positive impression of dentists for me — but West Lakes I’m Chaska has done it! Everyone I’ve worked with is thorough, efficient, and super nice. Also, Colleen is fantastic. She goes the extra mile when dealing with insurance, she provides estimates before services are performed, and she has fit me into the schedule last minute.
