What is a Home Sleep Apnea Test?
A sleep test conducted at home is often called a home sleep apnea test (HSAT). It is a medically prescribed, portable breathing monitor worn overnight in your own bed to test for sleep disorders. It tracks your sleep patterns, breathing and oxygen levels while you sleep. A sleep apnea diagnosis is based on a combination of symptom review and objective data collected from a home sleep test or in-lab sleep study. HSAT is commonly recommended when a provider needs a simple and reliable way to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea without requiring an overnight stay in a sleep lab.
Unlike a sleep study conducted in a sleep center, HSAT does not record brain activity, body position, or sleep stages. Because a home sleep apnea test only measures breathing and oxygen levels, conditions like periodic limb movement disorder often require an in-lab sleep study for proper diagnosis. Instead, it focuses on detecting breathing interruptions, which is sufficient when your sleep specialist suspects moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.
Benefits of At Home Sleep Study
Many patients prefer at home sleeping testing because it allows them to complete the evaluation in a familiar environment without the stress of an overnight lab visit. A home sleep apnea test is also a great option for patients who want fast answers, since results can typically be reviewed and interpreted within just a few days.
- Comfortable — sleep in your own bed
- Affordable — generally lower cost than lab studies
- Effective — accurate for diagnosing sleep apnea
- Easy setup — simple sensors and clear instructions
- Fast — no overnight clinic stay, quicker scheduling
- Convenient — minimal disruption to your routine
Since many sleep disorders go unnoticed for years, at-home testing can be an important first step in identifying issues that may be disrupting your rest.
How It Works
Because a home sleep apnea test captures your natural sleep environment, it often provides a more accurate reflection of your typical nighttime breathing patterns.
01
Consultation
Your oral appliance treatment journey begins with a thorough examination from a qualified dentist and sleep specialist. If you haven’t had a sleep test or completed a sleep study, we’ll set you up with an at-home sleep test with our sleep medicine partners.
If your sleep test confirms a diagnosis of mild to moderate sleep apnea and you are a good candidate for oral devices, we will start the process of creating your custom made mandibular advancement device. Many patients find that sleep apnea oral appliances offer a more comfortable and convenient alternative to CPAP therapy. Our team collaborates closely with your sleep specialist to ensure your treatment plan is accurate, effective, and medically supported.
02
Receive the Device
We’ll provide a home sleep test kit, usually including a small sensor to wear on your finger as you sleep. This home sleep test device will track your oxygen levels and other data as you sleep. It is small, comfortable and easy to use so you will hardly notice it as you sleep.
03
Sleep With the Device
Wear the sensor in your bed overnight, just like a normal night. Most patients complete the test in a single night with no issues.
04
Return / Upload Data
The next day you will send the device back to us or drop it off at our office so we can upload the data and analyze it with the help of a sleep physician.
05
Results Review
A board-certified sleep medicine physician will review the raw data with us. They interpret the respiratory event index and oxygen levels to determine if sleep apnea is present.
06
Treatment Plan
If the results indicate sleep apnea, we’ll discuss personalized treatment options, including oral appliances, CPAP, lifestyle therapy, or referrals if more testing or medical evaluation is needed.
Who Should Seek Home Sleep Apnea Studies?
If you have significant health conditions like severe lung or heart disease, neuromuscular disorders, or other complex issues, an in-lab study may still be recommended for a more detailed overview.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an at-home sleep test?
A home sleep apnea test is designed to detect breathing abnormalities that may indicate sleep apnea, even if symptoms are subtle or occur only during certain parts of the night. It’s a simplified, portable diagnostic test worn overnight at home to monitor breathing, airflow, oxygen levels and respiratory effort–to detect possible sleep apnea. A sleep apnea test can help determine whether your nighttime symptoms are caused by breathing disruptions or another underlying sleep issue. A sleep apnea test can also help determine whether your symptoms are related to obstructive sleep apnea or another condition affecting your nighttime breathing.
Is it accurate?
Yes, when used appropriately in patients with a high chance of sleep apnea, HSATS have shown high sensitivity and specificity in detecting obstructive sleep apnea. That said, they don’t capture sleep stages or every type of sleep disorder. If results don’t match symptoms, a lab study may be needed.
How do I prepare?
Sleep as you normally would. Avoid alcohol and sleeping pills if possible. Make sure sensors are properly attached before going to bed.
Is it covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans, including Medicare, cover HSAT when ordered by a qualified provider, especially if you have symptoms of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea.
